This publication is the culmination of many years of my personal experience and involvement in potato cultivation and the international potato information business. Over the years I have seen the constant interest of most industry members in matters related to potato seed and varieties. When communicating with growers, processors, dealers, storage managers, consultants, and for that matter virtually all potato specialists in any given country, the conversation at some point inevitably steers toward a discussion on seed and varieties.
The list of topics and issues related to potato seed and varieties is seemingly endless: How to treat seed; which product is best and which product takes care of which potential disease; ‘to cut’ or ‘not to cut’ seed; how to manage a particular variety when growing it in a particular soil type and particular climate; how much seed of a particular variety will be available in a particular country this year; which varieties are less susceptible to after cooking browning; which varieties store best; how can a variety’s store life be enhanced in chain stores; which varieties are good for the fresh cut industry in a particular country; etc, etc…
Global Potato Seed News is understandably a work in progress – so please stick with us for a bit, and most importantly – provide us with your ideas and wishes on how we can enhance this information source to fit your needs! Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at any time with your questions, comments and suggestions.
